The final list of candidates for B.C.'s upcoming 2024 Provincial General Election has been revealed, with about 50 people running in Vancouver Island-based ridings.

There are 15 ridings on the Island, and the BC NDP, the Conservative Party of British Columbia and the BC Green Party have candidates in all of them. There are also many independents, including some who were previously BC United candidates. The official opposition BC United’s leader, Kevin Falcon,Elections BC says there are 323 candidates in total across 93 ridings, with 269 representing seven political parties and 54 running as independent or unaffiliated.The finalized list comes as candidate nominations closed at 1 p.m.

It says candidates who have registered as independent will appear on the ballot with “Independent” next to their name, while those who have not been endorsed by a party or registered as independent will appear with just their name. Elections BC says there are 40 independent and 14 unaffiliated candidates this year, an increase from previous general elections. The closest was in 2013, when there were 35 independent and 11 unaffiliated candidates, with this data going back to ’96:Election day is Oct.
