The one person who had a legal obligation to at least stop and a moral obligation to check on Black was the driver of the SUV, Jersey City Councilwoman-at-Large Amy DeGise. But, she just kept going.

Closed-circuit and other video of the crash and its aftermath show that Black, a food deliveryman, biked around a car to run a red light directly into DeGise’s path and that DeGise’s brake lights didn’t come on as she continued along Forrest Street. At some point, she was in contact with police and received tickets for leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident. But details of how and when that happened have yet to come out.

The clock is ticking and patience is wearing thin as the number of calls for DeGise to resign from office grows. It would be unconscionable for the councilwoman and the political establishment to try to wait out the news cycle; there is no pretending this didn’t happen. As an elected official, the 37-year-old DeGise has sworn to uphold the law and do what is in the best interests of her constituents, including Black.

DeGise’s position as a councilwoman, her former role as head of the Hudson County Democratic Organization, her close ties to Mayor Fulop and the fact that she is the daughter of Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise have politics-weary cynics shaking their heads and wondering if anything of substance will come of the investigation.
