There are 11 states represented on the United States women’s national team’s 2023 World Cup roster. For the fifth straight cycle, Texas is not one of them....

Some coaches, players and executives in Dallas-Fort Worth say a bigger professional scene in the area could create a pipeline to better represent the Lone Star State — the second-most-populous state — on the national team., which began Thursday morning in Australia and New Zealand, is the third iteration of the women’s tournament since the launch of the NWSL, the top professional women’s league in the country. The league began with eight teams in its inaugural 2013 season.

The fee points to the growth of professional women’s soccer as an unprecedented investment into the sport. Comparing that to when Angel City FC and San Diego Wave FC joined the league in 2022, there is a massive increase in investment. The ownership groups from the two franchises paid between $2 million and $5 million for those teams to join, more than 10 times less than what Bay FC’s ownership group paid.

The FC Dallas academy has produced 11 current and former NWSL players, but the inability for players to transition straight into professional soccer from the academy can allow some to slip through the cracks. In the current U.S. pyramid, the NWSL is the only U.S. Soccer Federation-sanctioned professional league. The WPSL, United Women’s Soccer and USL W League all sit atop the amateur levels of the pyramid. Below them are the UWS League 2 and the U.S. Adult Soccer Association.“I guess it limits some girls’ ideas of how far they can go,” said Bronwynn Blair, a member of FC Dallas academy and rising senior at The Hockaday School.

The league is scheduled to begin playing in August 2024 with 10-12 markets in the initial launch. Eight of those markets have already been announced, and Dallas-Fort Worth is one of them.
