A cougar has been spotted in Benson Creek Falls Regional Park, prompting the closure of the Ammonite trail. The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) issued an alert on Monday, stating that additional sightings have reported the cougar guarding its kill in the area. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) has been notified, and warning signs were posted at trailheads on Friday. Trail closure signs were posted today. The falls viewpoint remains accessible via the Weigles Road trailhead.
The RDN advises the public to take precautions in case of wildlife encounters, including travelling in groups, leashing pets and carrying bear spray. Cougar attacks are rare, but if you encounter one, keep calm, make yourself look as large as possible and back away slowly. People travelling with small children should pick them up immediately as kids are most at risk. Cougars are strict carnivores that primarily feed on deer
