Another big step in protecting against coronavirus.

, announced Wednesday afternoon that it will be using its manufacturing sites to provide free hydro-alcoholic gel to medical and emergency services in an effort to fight against the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

"We stay close to our communities during these exceptionally challenging times," reads the statement released by the company. Coty is following in the steps of French corporation LVMH, whichthat it will be using its all of its French fragrance and makeup production facilities to make disinfecting gel free of charge for French hospitals.

While washing your hands is still the preferred method among experts for preventing infection, using hand sanitizer when you can't get to a sink and soap is the next best line of defense. "Alcohol-based sanitizers work by breaking down the germs, so not only do you have to have enough, the alcohol needs to hang around long enough to work," Michael Chang, an infectious disease specialist with UTHealth at the University of Texas in Houstonrecommending to rub your hands with sanitizer until they fully air-dry. "That generally ensures enough exposure time. The exposure time really needs to be more than 20 seconds.
