Costco ranked first in a 2023 survey conducted by Maru Public Opinion as Canada’s most respected grocery retailer.Coming in second and third, respectively, were Metro — whose workers in the GTA are striking for cost-of-living raises, although the survey was done before the work stoppage — and Walmart.CHARLEBOIS: What the Metro strike could mean to Canada's grocery industry
This is the second consecutive time that Costco has topped the list in a field of 14 grocery/food retailer organizations measured since November 2021. However, there were big changes in the 2023 rankings, including the rise of Metro, which inched up one spot from third to second place; Walmart, which rose 11 places to third spot; and Food Basics, which gained five spots from ninth to fourth..Not surprisingly given their PR of late, the Loblaw-owned companies and its brand took a beating as it went down eight places and its flagship stores dropped five places from eighth to second-to-last among the 14 grocers.
The survey was done by Maru Public Opinion with 2,932 randomly selected Canadian adults online on June 26 and 27.
