Menendez and his wife Nadine were charged Friday with taking bribes from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for using Menendez’s official office to further their financial interests. Sen. John Fetterman was the first Democratic senator to call on Menendez to step down on Saturday, followed by Sens. Sherrod Brown and Peter Welch on Monday.
Booker and at least nine more Democratic senators joined them Tuesday, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren , Jon Tester , Tammy Baldwin , Bob Casey , Jacky Rosen , Andy Kim , Martin Heinrich , Mark Kelly and Michael Bennet . Booker’s response was being closely watched and waited for since he served as a character witness for Menendez during his first corruption trial and has repeatedly referred to him as a friend and mentor.At least three senators—Fetterman, Tester and Casey—have said they will return donations they accepted from Menendez or his political action committees amid the charges.
