Coronavirus threat cancels classes at two major U.S. universities, with more expected to follow

Stanford has canceled classes and the University of Washington moved classes online due to the new coronavirus. More colleges are expected to follow.

Major universities in two areas of high risk, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area, were shut down Friday — the beginning of what is expected to be a wave of campus closures in coming weeks.

“We all feel really aware that we have community members it could really hurt,” Bella Maestas, a junior at University of Puget Sound, which switched to virtual classes, told MarketWatch in an online chat. “The student body is acting to protect one another, not ourselves. No one I know at my school is worried for their own self.”

Duke University issued a campus-wide alert Thursday with guidance for students leaving for spring break, advising them to cancel unnecessary travel and to avoid heavily populated events or venues.
