Latin America’s engineers, entrepreneurs and physicians are working together to produce ventilators at a fraction of the market price

With the coronavirus pandemic bearing down on Latin America and ventilators in short supply, engineers, entrepreneurs and physicians are coming together with an audacious goal: building their own breathing machines from scratch in a matter of weeks.

In Colombia, they started in mid-March, using open-source specs from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Their partners, manufacturers in Medellín, began to retool automotive and appliance plants to make less expensive ventilators, with production costs at roughly $1,500...
