The IMF projects the world’s gross fiscal debt will grow to 96.4% of GDP this year from 83.3% in 2019

WASHINGTON—Governments around the world will amass huge debts to combat the coronavirus, which could pose risks once the threat of the pandemic fades, the International Monetary Fund said in a report.

Already, global authorities have announced emergency efforts totaling almost $8 trillion in direct spending, loans and loan guarantees, the IMF said on Wednesday. That is roughly 9.5% of global output, according to Vitor Gaspar, the IMF’s fiscal-affairs director.
