Byrne is trained as an automotive service technician but has not worked since 2020, in part because of his addiction issues.On Nov. 7, 2021, he broke into Quality Tire in Corner Brook by breaking a garage door window and then unlocking the garage door. He stole three power tools, which he sold, and several cheques belonging to the owner of the business. Byrne used some of the cheques and gave some to other people.

On Jan. 2, 2022, he smashed a window in the door of the Atlantic Ready Mix building and in unlocking the door set off an alarm. Byrne fled the scene, but left behind blue latex gloves that were found to have his DNA on them.
