In the calmest conditions of the week at Royal Liverpool, Canada’s top-ranked golfer made a move early in the third round. The result was a golf ball that turned into a souvenir for the fan who retrieved it from underneath a grandstand. Perhaps still with the smallest glimmer of hope, Conners asked to see the ball to identify it, before proceeding to the left greenside pot bunker to play the second one. He saved a bogey with a beautiful up-and-down from the sand, but the 31-year-old Listowel, Ont. native’s Saturday charge was long over.
“Look at that, he absolutely flushes it,” said one English fan as he watched Conners’ wonderful approach shot to the par-4 16th hole. “Go on, Corey!”
