The 18th annual Copper Cliff Community Yard Sale took place over the weekend, with 41 listed yard sales and several special venues including food and art vendors. Despite off-and-on rain on Saturday, many residents postponed sales to Sunday or set up both days. The event, organized by the Copper Cliff Community Action Network, fosters community connections and has inspired similar yard sales in other Greater Sudbury areas like Lively.
The community of Copper Cliff is a happening place to be this weekend, with the 18th annual Copper Cliff Community Yard Sale taking place. The yard sale map put out by the Copper Cliff Community Action Network , which organizes the event, listed 41 yard sale s throughout the town, although organizers say there’s always pop-ups.
It’s not just a yard sale, though, as there’s also six special venues, which included food and art vendors and a church tea. The event was supposed to happen June 6, and many did set up that day, but with off-and-on rain Saturday, many chose to postpone their sales until June 7, or decided to set up both days.
Everywhere you went in Copper Cliff on Saturday, there were families and kids on bikes, and cars parked on the road, as people looked for treasures. Copper Cliff CAN volunteer Margaret Julian said the idea came from a small town in Nova Scotia that has a similar event. She said it’s a chance for people to get out and meet their neighbours.
“You don't know their names, now you know your names,” she said, adding that other Greater Sudbury communities also now host community-wide yard sales, including Lively. After speaking with Julian on her front porch on Cobalt Street in Copper Cliff, Sudbury.com headed across the road and chatted with Melanie Tincombe, who had a yard sale set up.
“I can always find things that I don't need in my house,” said Tincombe, who was selling a bit of everything, from sports equipment to Tinkerbell collectibles to her late mother’s art, with her big sale of the morning being a rice cooker. “It's a great way to visit with neighbours and to see other people in the community, young families and children. You just never know what will appeal to someone.
” One of the major hot spots was St. John the Divine Anglican Church, at the corner of Copper Cliff Park, home of the annual Famous Strawberry Social. Julian said the Copper Cliff CAN co-ordinates with the church to make sure the event is held on the same day as the community-wide yard sale. A large yard sale was also set up outside of the church, but most people were there for the strawberry shortcakes.
With fresh whipped cream, strawberries and homemade biscuits, they truly are locally famous, with fans lined up in the church basement to get theirs. . Teagan Hirsimaki was in the kitchen, one of a team of volunteers assembling more than 300 strawberry shortcakes .
Asked just how delicious the confections are, she said they’re “absolutely amazing. ” Another longstanding mainstay of the community yard sale is Amir’s Freshly Squeezed Lemonade and Desserts, one of several lemonade stands in Copper Cliff over the weekend. Amir Al Wakeel, 11, has been running the stand on Dow Drive in the community's townhouse complex for four years, with a set-up that includes a large lemon squeezer.
“It’s fun because I get to talk to people, bake stuff and sell stuff,” he said. “I’m practicing social interactions for the future. ” Over on Market Street, Sarah Sorbara chose community yard sale day to launch her new baking business, The Cackling Bakester. .
By the time Sudbury.com showed up at her stand, she was nearly sold out of her delicious treats, which included cake pops, snack mix, cookies, cake push pops and jumbo stuffies .
“I love the Copper Cliff garage sale,” said Sorbara. “The community here is just absolutely amazing, and the support that they throw behind you. I knew that I would have the support, I just didn't realize how much support from this community. Within about three hours I was almost completely sold out, so I couldn't ask for a better first day. ” Heidi Ulrichsen is Sudbury.com’s assistant editor.
