SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for November 7, 2023 | SaltWireST. JOHN'S, N.L. — “It’s a set-up,” convicted sex offender Dennis Peter Murphy yelled at reporters as he was led into a St. John’s courtroom Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Murphy, 63, was supposed to have a bail hearing on charges of sexual assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and failing to comply with a release order, but instead consented to remain in custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for Nov. 21. Murphy was arrested last week after a report of an alleged assault on Oct. 30 near downtown St. John’s in which a 31-year-old woman was injured.
Murphy, whose 20-page criminal record includes convictions for sexual violence against vulnerable females to whom he had supplied drugs and alcohol, was the subject of a public warning by the RNC, who described his behaviour as predatory. He is also facing 19 other charges, which he is scheduled to go on trial for in February 2024, including breaching a recognizance, uttering threats and three counts of failing to comply with a condition of a release order.
