The keel-laying ceremony signifies the official start of a ship's construction. A coin, believed to bestow good fortune upon the ship's captain and crew, was welded to the vessel's hull, a gesture rooted in practices dating back to ancient Rome. The Royal Canadian Navy selected the coin, which was presented by Rear Admiral Josée Kurtz, commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic. Halifax's Ashley Angevine undertook the welding. Her father, Patrick Britten, served in the Royal Canadian Navy for nearly 30 years.

The ship pays tribute to Lt. Robert Hampton Gray, a pilot with the Royal Navy fleet air arm. Enlisting in 1940 with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, Gray's heroism during the Second World War earned him a posthumous Victoria Cross. He notably led an airstrike against the Japanese destroyer, HIJMS Amakusa.
