As a $250,000 exterior upgrade, including a new ironwork fence, takes shape, CEO Nathan Medd is advocating for a public plaza in front of the Victoria Conservatory of Music
Nathan Medd did not expect that responding to crises on the 900-block of Pandora would be part of his job when he became the head of a music centre and performance venue in Victoria.
For years, the main doors of the stately stone Pandora Avenue conservatory building have been encircled by security fences to protect the heritage-designated Alix Goolden Performance Hall from damage, as the number of campers on the block increased. Medd told the Times Colonist it doesn’t make economic sense to use the doors on Pandora — which have to be staffed with front-of-house staff and security — for concerts at Alix Goolden right now.
Each of the fence panels weighs over 200 pounds and the motifs on the fence were designed by Christine Lintott Architects to reflect the Alix Goolden’s rose window that faces Pandora, he said. Beyond the new fence, Medd has plans for a revitalization that includes a public plaza on the south side of the 900-block of Pandora Avenue that could host music events and other cultural activities.
Medd said there’s also been support from the province through the B.C. Gaming grant and from longtime arts patrons Robert and Debbie Jawl of Jawl Properties. The proposed tower, which is being developed in partnership with B.C. Housing, the City of Victoria and the Capital Regional District, will have a mix of 158 rentals, 47 supportive-housing units and a 16,000-square-foot community space designed for recreation and childcare.
