Government House leader Karina Gould speaks in the House of Commons on Monday, September 25, 2023.OTTAWA — The Liberal government sought to erase from the record of the House of Commons the celebration of a Nazi war veteran during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit last Friday but that request was denied by the Conservatives who say to do so is “absolutely wrong.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that this moment, which led to a standing ovation by Zelenskyy and himself, but also by all MPs and dignitaries in the galleries, is “deeply embarrassing to the Parliament of Canada and, by extension, to all Canadians.”But the Conservatives argued there is a difference between regretting an embarrassing moment and erasing it completely, as they refused to consent to Gould’s proposition.
“Deleting the text of the Speaker’s words from Hansard would have only one purpose: to try and forget what happened, to wash the record clean,” he added.
