Greeks back conservative opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis and reject the left-wing ruling party in elections that bucked Europe's trend of turning to populist and euroskeptic parties.

Greek opposition New Democracy conservative party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis waves to his supporters after win in parliamentary elections at the New Democracy headquarters in Athens, on Sunday, July 7, 2019. Official results from nearly 60% of ballots counted showed the conservative New Democracy party of Kyriakos Mitsotakis winning comfortably with 39.7% compared to Tsipras' Syriza party with 31.5%.

The results indicated Greek voters bucked a recent trend in Europe of citizens rejecting the political mainstream and turning to populist and euroskeptic parties. He said his party now would work to protect the rights of working Greeks as “a responsible but dynamic opposition” to the government. Mitsotakis, the son of a former prime minister, brother of a former foreign minister and uncle to a newly elected mayor of Athens, fought during the campaign to shed the image of family privilege.
