SYDNEY MINES, N.S. — Pierre Poilievre’s visit to the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission on Thursday was a relatively conservative stopover in comparison to reports of his visit to an anti-carbon tax convoy close to the New Brunswick-Nova Scotia border earlier this week.

“On the drive between events in Atlantic Canada, the leader noticed an anti-carbon tax protest. As a vocal opponent of Justin Trudeau’s punishing carbon tax which has driven up the cost of groceries, gas, and heating, he made a brief, impromptu stop,” Sebastian Skamski, a spokesperson for Poilievre’s office, said in an emailed statement.

It’s this messaging that Poilievre calmly delivered to about 40 invited guests to the Souls Harbour’s Sydney Mines drop-in centre, with the hope that this will also reach area residents who feel a change in the government powers that is needed. Aaron Hersey, originally from Digby but who calls Sydney home, said he wanted to come “pray for Poilievre and encourage him with what he is doing.

While Souls Harbour Rescue Mission hosted the event, mission staff and executive members wanted to make clear they are non-partisan as far as politics go and only provided a venue for Poilievre’s visit.
