Congresswoman Jayapal investigating detentions at Canada-U.S. border amid U.S.-Iran tensions GlobePolitics

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, right, seen here on Jan. 6, 2020, holds a news conference alongside Negah Hekmati, left, an interior designer who holds Canadian, American and Iranian citizenship.Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal says her office is looking into what happened at a Canada-U.S. border crossing over the weekend when dozens of Canadians and Americans of Iranian descent were held for hours.

“I think it’s very clear, particularly when you hear the timing of Negah ... her family having crossed that same border just days before, that this happened following the assassination of [Gen.] Soleimani and Trump’s increased military action in that region,” she said. Ms. Hekmati said she and her family arrived at the border around midnight and were held there until five in the morning. Members of her family were born in either the U.S. or in Canada, and everyone was carrying a passport, she said.

“We’ve heard tragic and troubling stories of what would be akin to loyalty questions being asked of these individuals, we heard stories of them being told to list the names of all their family members, give them their e-mails, turn over social media, and this is extremely troubling,” he said.
