Castro was joined at a news conference by several neighborhood associations who've had cluster main boxes damaged and we're told by the U.S. Postal Service that it's now the job of the HOA to maintain and replace mailboxes. A job the postal service has been doing for decades. The cost to replace the cluster boxes is higher than you might think - upwards of $70,000.
Castro says many of these communities are on shoestring budgets and the post office can't suddenly change their policy. "They don't have $60,000 - $40,000 lying around as a neighborhood to pick up this cost and so again, the Postal Service in San Antonio should do the right thing and do what it's been doing for 20-30 years," he said. "We're not asking them to do anything new."
In the meantime, the postal service is reportedly keeping the mail, including paychecks and medications for homebound seniors, and having them pick up their mail at the post office or returning them to sender. Castro has sent a letter to the U.S. Postal Service headquarters in San Antonio detailing his concerns.
