A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health says the province is considering ordering vaccines against the disease from the federal government.

Monkeypox, which mostly occurs in west and central Africa, is a rare viral infection similar to human smallpox, though milder. It was first recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1970s. The number of cases in West Africa has increased in the last decade. Canada's chief public health officer, said on Friday authorities are investigating "a couple dozen" possible cases of monkeypox, with most being from Quebec.Dr. Theresa Tam said the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg is also running tests on samples from B.C.
