El condado de Maui demandó el jueves a la Hawaiian Electric Company por los incendios que arrasaron Lahaina alegando que la compañía eléctrica cometió una negligencia al no cortar el suministro a pesar de los vientos excepcionalmente fuertes y las condiciones de sequía.
El relato de los testigos y los videos indican que chispas procedentes de los cables de alta tensión causaron los fuegos cuando los postes se quebraron debido a los fuertes vientos de un huracán que pasaba cerca de la isla. Los incendios del 8 de agosto, que dejaron al menos 115 fallecidos y un número indeterminado de desaparecidos, son los más letales en más de un siglo en Estados Unidos.
La compañía sabía que los fuertes vientos “podrían derribar los postes eléctricos, el tendido y prender la vegetación”, agregó la demanda. “Los demandados sabían también que si sus equipos eléctricos aéreos provocaban un incendio, éste se propagaría a una velocidad sumamente rápida”.
