The weeklong festival spans venues all across the Bay Area.
Outside Lands might steal most of the spotlight when it comes to San Francisco music festivals, but for music fans less interested in massive headliners, Noise Pop Festival offers a hipper alternative without the hassle of fighting through crowds at Golden Gate Park.
This year, the programming will run from Feb. 21 to 27 at venues across the Bay Area and will include a series of film screenings in addition to live concerts. Although the band is a true wrecking crew of players , frontman Jeff Tweedy is the soul of the operation, a songwriter who’ll break your heart, then mend it up again.
As far as devastating songwriters go, there’s few that can match Phil Elverum’s chronicles of oblivion. His long-running project The Microphones earned critical acclaim in the early aughts for “The Glow Pt. 2,” a masterwork of lo-fi introspection in which he essentially tortured his acoustic guitar into sounding like it was on fire.
