A faster rail line planned to span the corridor from Quebec City to Toronto could ease transportation woes, but lingering concerns related to the project include the ultimate price tag and the level of community engagement during development, according to transportation experts and senators. “The cost is going to be astronomical. We don't know what that cost is,” said Matti Siemiatycki, director of the Infrastructure Institute at the University of Toronto .

“There's just a lot of different variables that then determine whether this project is going to be successful or not.” The High Frequency Rail (HFR) project is a proposed rail link that would allow trains to travel at higher speeds and with greater frequency between some of Canada’s most populous regions. The 1,000-km passenger rail service would run from Quebec City and pass through Trois-Rivières, Montreal, Ottawa, Peterborough, and Toronto.
