There were 324 complaints lodged with the Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2022, down from 417 in the previous year. - FileThe number of official complaints lodged against Nova Scotia doctors dropped last year after a spike in 2021. There were 324 complaints lodged with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2022, a spokesperson said in an email Tuesday. The overall volume of complaints has skyrocketed in recent years. The college received 212 more complaints in 2021 compared to 2016, an increase of 103 per cent.
“The complaints investigated are increasingly complex with an ongoing rise in the number of allegations of sexual misconduct,” a statement onThe volume is not considered a marker of quality of care across the profession, “but rather a reflection of the public’s expectations of the profession. The dominant cause for this nationwide trend likely reflects the growing public call for more accountability from all institutions, including the medical profession.
“The posting of disciplinary sanctions on the College website would not correlate with complaints received in any given year,” the NSCPS spokesperson said.
