All the patience, volunteer work and community support was finally rewarded Tuesday when Geoff Lathem watched the first pitch at the Canadian Under 23 Fast…
Back in the days when fastball had a bigger calling, Lathem grew up playing on the Carp diamonds himself and the project has definitely been a labour of love for him and the rest of the proud community.
While the passion for fast pitch has declined in Ontario over the past couple of decades, that’s definitely not the case in Newfoundland, which has become a hotbed for the sport, with a highly competitive senior league based in St. John’s.Article content “We see what these guys are doing, they’re playing on Team Canada for four cycles now and we want to be those guys. We look up to them. We play 3-4 nights per week. We want to show them that we’re the next wave of people to come.”
Of course, mastering any type of outdoor sport amid the elements in Newfoundland can be a test of weather tolerance. “Newfoundlanders now, we put in the work in the off-season,” he said, with a smile. “It’s a very short summer that we have. And competition is tough for us. Every flight off the island is $1,000, right, per person.”Article content
