\u0022This is very much a growth budget, but it has the feel of a very much status quo budget.\u0022

On Feb. 1, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe unveiled a “tight” draft budget that held property tax increases to 2.5 per cent while freezing transit fares, spending more on roads, increasing recreation fees and investing $5 million in the city’s climate action plan. City council will vote on the final budget Wednesday.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

Meanwhile, the public transit budget shows $47 million in efficiencies in capital spending, which includes retiring high-maintenance older buses, said Laura Shantz, a board member of Ottawa Transit Riders. “If we don’t see that, there will be another hole in the budget to account for that ridership number difference,” she said.

The focus of Greenspace Alliance of Canada’s Capital in this budget is on trees and wetlands, said chair Paul Johanis. “We would like to see direction coming from council on these two areas,” he said. “We’re happy to see the $5 million for climate change. That’s a good step. But it’s just a first step.”Article content
