The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness vehicle and grassroots fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Since the event’s inception, $47 million has been raised to help cover the expenses of programming, uniforms, field rentals and costs associated with running the Special Olympics.
Over the years the Torch Run has evolved and now encompasses a variety of innovative fundraising platforms including Polar Plunges, Tip-A-Cops, NHL Alumni Games, Torch Rides, Endurance Series and more.
On Thursday, Oct. 12, a sea of red Torch Run shirts could be spotted as the group did a five kilometre run through Ottawa’s downtown for the Law Enforcement Torch Run Opening Ceremony. The event raised funds and awareness for the Special Olympics locally, with members from the Ottawa Police Service, the RCMP, OPP, Parliamentary Protective Service and OC Transpo special constables coming together to participate with the athletes and volunteers.
“I would not have had the opportunity to be a world champion without the help of volunteers, sponsors and donors like you,” Kimana Mar said. “Special Olympics are only possible because of caring people like you. The truth is, everyone is a champion when they are involved with Special Olympics.”The group of athletes, police officers and supporters gathered on Parliament Hill for a team photo partway through the run.
