With millions watching worldwide, India hopes to become the fourth country in the world to land a spacecraft on the moon

The Vikram lander of Chandrayaan 2, or Moon Chariot 2, was due to land in the lunar South Pole region, a region the Indian Space Research Organisation says is"completely unexplored".

"Subsequently the communication from lander to ground station was lost. The data is being analysed," he said. "It is like suddenly somebody comes and gives you a newborn baby in your hands. This is important because it could determine whether having people live on the Moon is feasible, said Mathieu Weiss, a representative in India for France's space agency CNES.
