Harris County Commissioners Court’s Latino majority already delivering in a new era of representation

that workers on county projects, from roads to bridges, be given Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety training. The policy will help protect the many Latino workers involved in those projects, according to Paul Puente, the executive secretary of the Houston Gulf Coast Building and Construction Trades Council.

“It’s just a better form of representation when you have a large institution that specializes … and has centralized resources,” Bunin said. “We have shared life experiences that make us think about those issues and those challenges that relate to the demographic that we represent,” he said. The diversity on Commissioners Court is in sharp contrast with Houston’s City Council, where the lack of Latino representation has drawn ire and even a lawsuit in federal court.
