The message was clear at last weekend’s Fiona briefing: Premier Dennis King and the P.E.I. government are relying on the “good nature” of landlords and ...

A non-functioning generator sits outside the provincial seniors' apartment building at 28 Hunt Ave. on Oct. 3. Residents got their electricity back later that day — 10 days after post-tropical storm Fiona hit P.E.I. knocking out power to tens of thousands of Islanders. Alison Jenkins • The Guardian: Premier Dennis King and the P.E.I. government are relying on the “good nature” of landlords and business owners to ensure aid reaches every Island worker and renter.

There is going to be oversight, accountability and follow up, though, to make sure the money goes where it is supposed to, King said. So, I asked King what will stop landlords from using Fiona to renovict tenants and bypass rental laws. “If you own a building, you would like to get it repaired in a certain amount of time. Sure, there’s some financial obligations there, but you also have the obligation to those who are living there to make sure they’re looked after as well,” he said, noting government will try to “partner with everybody.”

He did not commit to specific funding, but said government will continue to learn on the fly and react as quickly as they can. In the case of the $250, the province supplies the money, and Red Cross hands it out. King has marketed this money as a bandaid for urgent needs like groceries or gas. Including the handful of targeted programs I mentioned, this is all the money announced for renters, workers and seniors. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what those on-the-fly lessons about “good nature” reveal.
