My grandfather Burt was the sheriff of Wilson County for 20 years. His brothers, Herff and Quirl Carnes, were Texas Rangers, both killed in the line of duty. My father, Bob Carnes, was a Texas state trooper, then an FBI agent.
Of all the stories coming out of Uvalde, this is the one that most concerns me: the state of law enforcement in Texas and the ease of getting assault-style weapons. Where is law enforcement if not even one out of 400 had what it took? Given, it was a different time. My father wouldn’t have been facing an assault-style weapon.
What of the legislators and elected leaders? They are the first ones, and I include Abbott in this, who will point to mental health as the culprit.
