Red McCombs had the vision to invest in people and the community to create prosperity.

Even if you were a young lawyer who had just moved to San Antonio, or a young San Antonio real estate developer, McCombs took the time to meet and share his optimism, belief in us and in San Antonio’s future. McCombs also foresaw the value of having sports franchises in a city as a way to elevate its national identity. His investments in professional sports franchises — basketball and football — resulted in exponential returns for their communities, way beyond expectations at the time he made them. He recognized what those teams could mean to a community’s spirit as well as its growth and economy.
That settlement included spinning off and relocating Lo-Vaca Gathering Company, which included Bill Greehey as chairman, to San Antonio. This led to Valero and NuStar Energy. Think for a minute what their corporate economic impact and philanthropic culture means to San Antonio now and in the future.
