This freedom — to investigate and teach even unpopular ideas — is the real power of U.S. research universities. If a faculty member “quiet quits,” he or she will be fired. And a tenured professor can always be fired for cause. If, for example, a professor doesn’t show up to teach classes or misappropriates money from a federal grant.
In this political environment, tenure gives researchers like me the power to study the causes and effects of climate change and share our findings, even if our work goes against the dominant political narrative.
