Spelling bee competitions promote a love of language and learning

Nimra Fatima: “The spelling bee experience has helped me discover the power, beauty and functionality of the English language.” - ContributedNimra Fatima is an Indian-Canadian mom of three who works as an IT consultant in Halifax. She is also a certified English as a second language instructor, an avid reader and writer, and has been volunteering with Spelling Bee of Canada to organize competitions for children in Atlantic Canada since 2019.

Spellers in St. John’s show off their Telegram Spelling Bee medals while they wait for the competition to begin. - SaltWire Network file photo I volunteer extensively in the community. If there is anything missing where I feel it’ll benefit my kids, I make it my mission to create those avenues. This is how the Spelling Bee Atlantic chapter came into existence.

Each time I heard “I can’t do this, it’s too hard,” I was tempted to say, “You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to,” but instead I said, “This is hard, but you are smart and I know you can do it.” Having worked in schools with elementary children and seeing their attitudes towards tests and their learning approaches, I feel a mindset change is the first thing that is needed for setting kids up for success.

As for my kids, I have seen their self-confidence both soar and plummet at times. I have seen their ability to put in the hard work towards achieving a goal, handle the nerves of facing a competition, and not give up when things became tough. I have seen them go through success and failure, and I’ve seen how they manoeuvred their feelings and emotions. In three years, they have learnt essential life skills which aren’t always taught in schools.
