Jan Rofihe, BSN, who worked in and studied health care across Canada, provided the following opinion article. The concept of forest therapy was new to me ...

From the age of seven in the mountains of Colorado, years in the mountains and near the ocean of Washington state, and from 1979 in Nova Scotia, Jim told me in a telephone interview he has been “wandering in the forest, learning from wild plants and animals.”Jim describes his role as “like a host, introducing plants and animals and individuals to each other.”

At the top of the long list of benefits of forest bathing, or forest walking, or forest therapy Jim explains that; 1. We “wake up.” 2. We relax and let go a bit of our anxiety. 3. We expand our minds. 4. And we get a closer experience and understanding of the reciprocity among all beings. When leading others in the forest, Rosmarie is guided by a very personal relationship with nature. She helps participants “leave the other world behind” to find their “home,” she told me.A walk with Rosemarie begins with a gentle nudge to be aware of where you are. By focusing on your senses, she suggests what you might observe more deeply. Wandering to what “speaks” to you in the environment is encouraged. A time to sit quietly and ask questions is part of the experience.

Yoga and mindfulness practices increased her ability to manage stress, she told me over coffee. The combination of the physical feelings of wellness, the calming of her “wandering mind,” bringing her to the present moment was an experience she wanted to share with others. The benefits of forest therapy add to those of yoga in many ways. The science is widely available and outlined in Dr. Qing Li’s book, “Forest Bathing: how trees can help you find health and happiness” .
