As the federal government considers how to move forward, one thing is for certain — curbing pollution from the oil and gas industry needs to be front and centre for Canada’s climate strategy.This year, millions of people in Canada have already been impacted by the raging wildfires and destructive floods linked to climate change. As of August, over 13 million hectares of forests have been burned in Canada. This has displaced communities, destroyed livelihoods and burned down ecosystems.

Canada’s oil and gas industry is the largest and the fastest growing source of pollution in the country. It accounts for nearly 30 per cent of Canada’s domestic emissions. And while other industries have successfully reduced their greenhouse gas pollution, the oil and gas industry’s emissions have nearly doubled since 1990.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault promised to have draft regulations for the emissions cap out this summer. With summer quickly coming to an end, and climate change being the top concern for most Canadians, releasing these draft regulations must be a main priority in the meetings with Prime Minister Trudeau and his Cabinet.
