The Washington Commanders announced Monday the team cut quarterback Carson Wentz after only one season.
Wentz played eight games for the Commanders in the 2022 season, throwing for 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He went 2-5 in his seven starts for the team. He had the worst record of the three starting quarterbacks for the Commanders last season.By cutting Wentz, the Commanders are saving over $26 million in cap space, according to ESPN.
The Commanders traded with the Indianapolis Colts to acquire Wentz last March. He had two years left on his contract with the Commanders when he was released. The roster move is the latest change to the Commanders offense this offseason. Earlier this year, the team parted ways with offensive coordinator Scott Turner and hired Eric Bieniemy from the Kansas City Chiefs. Bieniemy is also set to serve as the assistant head coach under Ron Rivera.
The biggest change that could still come this offseason would be a change in ownership for the Commanders. Team owner Dan Snyder began exploring a sale in November 2022, and reports indicate the team looks to have a sale done before next month's league owners meeting.Billionaire Jeff Bezos has reportedly hired a firm to explore a bid for the team, but there are conflicting reports on whether Snyder is willing to sell to Bezos.
