A controversial comedy troupe known for its racist and offensive jokes is scheduled to perform at Hamilton's Levity Comedy Club, sparking debate about the responsibility of venues in curating their programming and the potential harm of allowing platforms for such humor.

A comedy troupe known for racist jokes is scheduled to perform at Hamilton's Levity Comedy Club & Lounge next month, despite facing cancellations at other Canadian venues due to public outcry. The troupe, known as Danger Cats, has been criticized for their offensive material, which includes jokes targeting Jewish people, Indigenous children who died at residential schools, and victims of convicted serial killer Robert Pickton. The group has also been associated with far-right elements.

Members have appeared on podcasts and in photos with individuals from Diagolon, a group identified in a 2022 House of Commons report as an example of 'ideologically motivated violent extremism.' Danger Cats' frontman, Uncle Hack (real name Brendan Blacquier), has even excused attacks on politicians related to their COVID-19 lockdown and vaccine policies, suggesting they may need to 'pay the piper.'His social media posts frequently target marginalized groups, and the group promotes their shows as 'desensitivity training.' While Levity Comedy Club and the Danger Cats did not respond to requests for comment, the controversy has sparked debate about the responsibility of venues in curating their programming and the potential harm of allowing platforms for offensive humor. Caitlin Craven, executive director of the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion, emphasized the danger of normalizing bigoted beliefs through comedy, stating that such jokes can contribute to a climate where discrimination is tolerated. She expressed concern that venues need to recognize their role in amplifying harmful ideas and consider the impact of their programming on marginalized communities
