Black Republicans are rare in California, but they hope the bombastic recall candidate will inspire more people of color to run for elected office.

Larry Elder has struggled to gain wide support in his old neighborhood in his quest to become California’s first Black governor.

But Rankin, who was a member of the advisory board for Black Voices for Trump during the 2020 presidential campaign, insists there are other types of Black conservatives, too. Grant, for example, also grew up in South Central and got into Republican politics, in part because he was offered an internship by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
