Soccer team eyes NWSL's single-game crowd mark for Saturday night match in Mission Valley

“We want to set the NWSL attendance record, and we want to sell out Snap,” Wave President Jill Ellis said, attaching both lofty targets to the team’s 7 p.m. match Saturday, Sept. 17 at San Diego State’s new stadium. “It that simple.”

Ellis lifted the past two World Cup trophies as coach of the U.S. women’s national team as did Wave star Alex Morgan. Wave teammate Kailen Sheridan of Canada captured the CONCACAF event’s top goalkeeper honor, and giving the Wave four participants in the final, midfielder Taylor Kornieck and rookie defender Naomi Girma closed out the Americans’ 1-0 victory Monday night in Monterrey, Mexico.

“This is a stadium that’s the perfect setting for soccer,” Ellis said. “It was built with more than just football in mind. It’s beautiful. I know the first time I took our head coach down there … was just, like, ‘Wow, this is a place that deserves a very special team, and our fans will relish the chance here to connect to the team.’ ’’

Support they’ve received from local businesses influenced as well the Wave aiming for the NWSL single-game record. “With so much emphasis right now on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, you’re seeing a lot of companies invest in bringing their teams out to watch our team,” Wolf Stein said.
