Ernie Cowan's Outdoors column

I call it the “third dimension.”It’s that special time when imagination takes over for reality.

The third dimension is darkness, a time when imagination takes over, allowing the mind and the heart to fill in the blanks. It’s a unique way to enjoy nature through a whole new state of discovery. Suddenly my focus changed from the puddle of light in front of me to the larger scene surrounding us. I became aware of sounds, shapes and smells that I had missed while following the flashlight beam. Our pace slowed, and we were now part of the forest instead of visitors passing through.

An Athabaskan native told me these heavenly events are considered to be spirits of the departed, which they call Happy Dancers, who can be summoned by a whistle to lift you to heaven and dance with you.Seeing a distant green glow, I whistled and was profoundly moved by the display that soon unfolded. In the dim arctic starlight, my eyes saw a beautiful celestial show, but my heart was carried to heaven and filled with memories of departed loved ones.

Annual meteor showers, the occasional comet, a nocturnal lightning storm or a lunar eclipse can be captivating. You need nothing more than a chair, or a soft ground pad, to just settle comfortably at a dark sky location and let the show begin.
