Undrafted San Diegan, an alum of Mt. Carmel High, is having a big rookie season with the New Orleans Saints.

The crowd-stirring speed Rashid Shaheed displayed with Mt. Carmel High on Friday nights in Rancho Peñasquitos has translated — with improved physical maturity — to the New Orleans Saints of the NFL.

They’ve seen Shaheed sprint to long touchdowns against the AFC-champion Bengals , the Cardinals in a nationally telecast game and the Falcons . Last Sunday, he caught all six of his targets in a 20-10 upset of the NFL-leading Eagles. “His humble nature, his hard work in the classroom, practices and the weight room — there’s just not enough I can say about him,” he added. “Great teammate. He comes from a great family. His parents are tremendously supportive, in academics and athletics.”

His first collegiate season, in 2017, came two years after his final prep season. Shaheed didn’t like being away from football for that one season, he told the Union-Tribune in 2017, but said he benefited from acclimating to college life before first playing.
