Shared offensive load fuels 5-3 win in Arizona as Padres move to 9-2 when scoring at least four runs
The Padres offense hints and teases. Just when it seems run-scoring promise is backed up for miles like a looming Rose Bowl parade, any whiff of excitement is followed by sobering silence.
Instead of slinking back into run-producing hibernation, Matt Carpenter, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim — none hitting more than .211 coming in — drove in runs. Then a strange, wondrous thing happened. The Padres collected a two-out, two-run single by Kim to surge in front 4-3. The fact that it felt unexpected and rare spoke volumes about a season that began as a head-scratcher.
This has been nowhere close to the collective wrecking ball predicted to scatter opposing pitchers like toppled bowling pins. Most games, it has been meek, flailing, hesitant and off balance. Most times, it has been a toothless mystery. In Game 3 of the series with the Diamondbacks, the tweaks were subtle. Manny Machado, whose career on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .829 had crated to .544, landed a day off — though the main goal was to rest a cranky back on the unforgiving turf.
