Tanya Selvaratnam is a tireless advocate for women’s rights. Her accomplishments and awards — as an actor, artist, film producer and book author — are too numerous to count. with allegations of physical abuse by Eric Schneiderman, who was then attorney general of New York.published the women’s accusations, Schneiderman, who denied the allegations and then later apologized,Selvaratnam’s enlightening memoir, “Assume Nothing: A Memoir of Intimate Violence,” will be published in the spring.
Maybe these questions should be obsolete. Indeed, the many compelling and complex reasons people don’t leave abusive situations have been amply documented. “Forgiveness is subjective,” Selvaratnam writes. And, indeed, few people can — or even should — try to muster it for their abusers. But one wouldn’t have to forgive abuse to benefit from Selvaratnam’s hard-won wisdom.
