A Dispatch analysis of Columbus police data from 2012 through August found Black males represent 62% of all people shot by police.

. Both officers are facing criminal charges in those deaths.

All six of the people shot by city police officers thus far in 2022 also were Black males. The lone death occurred on Aug. 30 whenwhile serving warrants for his arrest on multiple charges. "The introduction of a new police chief or a new set of policies might give a community and a municipality a sense of, 'OK, we’re watching,' but there’s a level of skepticism, Bell Hardaway said."That skepticism never ever leaves, and rightly so, because it’s a recurring thing. If we expect for communities to say, 'You have a chief that looks like us and now our problems are fixed,' that’s textbook gaslighting.

Robin Davis, a spokesperson for Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, said in a statement that the city is continuing to work to"eliminate disparities and dismantle systemic racism everywhere it exists, including by diversifying our safety forces, improving police training and holding officers accountable for wrongdoing."to the Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services office to review the practices of Columbus police. That review, which began in 2021, is ongoing.
