The Blue Jackets finished their trip to Finland with a second loss to the Avalanche, stretching their losing streak to five straight games overall.
, and immediately painted a picture of a long night for the Jackets.
— It wasn't just in the first period that the Jackets gave up a goal shortly after the puck dropped. Martin Kaut scored 1:22 into the second period to give the lead back to the Avalanche, and they didn't look back from there. The sequence began with a turnover by defenseman Andrew Peeke, and Cale Makar set up Kaut for the goal with a pass he bounced off the end boards and onto Kaut's backhand on the far side of the net, much to the confusion of the Jackets' defense.
— Shortly after Toews' goal, Patrik Laine and Johnny Gaudreau got a two-on-one break for the Jackets. But instead of the ease with which Colorado scored on those rushes, Gaudreau's pass was broken up by Makar and the duo weren't able to generate a shot from their rush opportunity. A 4-1 deficit is unlikely to be overcome, but a rush goal from Laine in that situation would've provided an immediate lift for the Jackets after a dismal first five minutes of the period.
"It’s still early, but, I mean, we have to get back in the win column. Don’t want to fall behind like this.""That’s been part of our struggle this whole time, that consistency.
