Columbia University says it will pay $165 million in a new settlement to patients who reported a gynecologist at the school’s hospital sexually abused them
Columbia University said Friday it will pay $165 million in a second settlement to patients who reported a gynecologist at the school’s hospital sexually abused them while he was their doctor.
The settlement to 147 former patients is the latest turn in the long-running case of Robert Hadden, who practiced medicine from 1993 to 2012. He lost his license in 2016 after pleading guilty to two state charges of sex acts. In 2021, Columbia reached a separate $72 million settlement with 79 of the doctor’s former patients.
“We deeply regret the pain that Robert Hadden’s patients suffered and hope that these resolutions will provide some measure of support for the women he hurt,” Columbia University Medical Center and New York Presbyterian, said in a statement., the former doctor allegedly touched, squeezed and licked his victims, in what he claimed were medically necessary gynecological exams. He also conducted “sexualized breast exams” and “inappropriate mole checks.
“Hadden acted as a predator in a white coat,” said Audrey Strauss, then acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, at the time of the indictment. “Many [victims] didn’t know that his examinations were inappropriate and returned to see him for years.” Dr. Hadden is now awaiting trial on federal charges that he brought women across state lines for the purpose of sexual abuse, according to Columbia.Anthony T. DiPietro, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said he believes there are more victims who have not yet come forward because they were unaware Dr. Hadden mistreated them by having them return to his office for unnecessary tests so he could grope them.
