Indianapolis has elevated veteran kicker Chase McLaughlin from the practice squad to the active roster, making McLaughlin the winner of this week’s battle to replace Rodrigo Blankenship, who was waived after botching two kickoffs and missing the game-winning 42-yard field goal in overtime in Houston.

The battle between McLaughlin and undrafted rookie Lucas Havrisik began in a seven-kicker tryout Tuesday and continued throughout the week. “They both kicked out there today,” Colts head coach Frank Reich said in his Friday press conference. “ and I will talk that through and make a final decision on that, either today or tomorrow morning.”Reich and Ballard landed on McLaughlin.

The fourth-year veteran won’t be fazed by the situation. McLaughlin has been through just about every possible situation in his three seasons in the NFL — eight different teams, three injury fill-ins as a rookie, an injury fill-in for the Jaguars in 2020, then a full season in Cleveland before the Browns drafted Cade York this offseason. He hasn’t had the consistency. McLaughlin has made 75.

But the Colts have seen him take this job and run with it before. McLaughlin took over for an injured Adam Vinatieri in 2019 and made 5 of 6 field goals, plus all of his extra points, in a four-game stretch to the season.Havrisik has a remarkably powerful leg, but he’s rarely been a team’s primary kicker. In college at Arizona, Havrisik was the long-distance kicker, and the Colts are the first team to sign him off of a tryout.
